The Twisted Path: Fiction vs. Nonfiction Writing

By Lily Strange

I have discovered that a person may be good at one kind of writing but lousy at another. I've realized for a long time that I'm a lousy romance writer, but it wasn't until recently that I also discovered that I'm a lousy article writer. I don't know that this was always true. When I was young I considered going into journalism. I got an A in my high school journalism class and prided myself on my "just the facts" journalistic style as well as my editorial style.
I could probably still do "just the facts" reporting. The problem comes with trying to make a topic interesting, and I fear that with the possible exception of metaphysical essays, I fall far short. I suppose that informational articles are where people actually tend to make a bit of money. Wouldn't you know it? Leave it to me to go down the twisted path where the scenery is interesting but the money is scarce.
